How to open a rar file

How to open a rar file

A rar file is a file containing one or more files - called an archive - which have been compressed into a single file to save space. The files within the rar archive must be extracted to a folder such as My Documents or your Desktop, before they can be used. If the rar file contains a program that you want to run, it is best to create a temporary folder into which to extract the files, before you run it.
There is no built-in support for opening rar files in Windows. There are many archive manager programs available on the Web, some of which support the rar format in addition to more common archive formats such as zip.
There is only one program that can both open rar files and create them, and that is WinRar.
If you simply need to open rar files, but would prefer a utility that can open and create many other compressed archive types, The PC Guru recommends BitZipper or Alpha ZIP.
